The home stretch.

Every week, I start out thinking that this week will be better.
It won't be as hard, or as busy.
I'll get more sleep.
Every week I go back to school and realize that I was absolutely wrong.
Each week I get less sleep, more stressed, and lose more hair (figuratively).
I am just
so ready for April.
So ready.

No touching

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UuHILqDIvis

I show you this so that you can look at the outfit that George Bluth is wearing.
Because I now have one of those. And handcuffs. And a KAZOO!
Why?
Because I was in a parade yesterday. A glorious parade. Making a statement about drunk driving.
Don't believe me?
Take a gander.

So awesome.

motherly instincts

I believe that I've mentioned one of my plants before.
I've mentioned my bamboo. My wonderful bamboo that has gone through more college with me than anything or anyone else.
But, I have other plants. I was talking to my mom about my plants and what will happen to them when I leave BYU. There are just so many, I can't take them on a plane. I also can't ship them. I could leave them with someone staying in Provo, like Alison, Dana, Bianca or Katie. But I told my mom that I wasn't sure that I would be able to do that. It would be like giving up a child, and while I know that my friends would take good care of them, I love my plants.
My mom said that this is a result of my motherly instincts kicking in. I can't have a baby right now, and I can't have pets (my apartment won't allow it) so I'm attaching myself to these plants.
But of course I'm attached. I have nurtured these plants. I have raised some of them from seedlings. The others I have raised from almost dying. Plus, they're just so cute.

Basil
Rosemary
Cilantro
Morning Glory
Lavender. This one is exciting. This little guy just sprouted in the last couple of days. I've been waiting for him for about a month. Isn't he sweet?
Bamboo
Aloe Vera (and my clocky).
Money Tree.

apparently I have a twin.

She has the same hair,
Same build,
Similar face,
And similar outfits.

Who knew?

Ouch, Charlie

Maybe you think this is weird, or too much information, but here it goes.
I like giving blood.
I know that sounds strange, a lot of people can't even think about it, but I do.
I like the feeling that I'm helping other people.
It's not difficult.
You lay on a bed and squeeze a ball for 3 to 7 minutes and you save up to 3 lives. It's nice.
I also enjoy the snacks. It's like free lunch.
I try to give blood as often as I can.
However, like most things in my life (planes, stairs, etc.), I'm not very good at it.
In high school, my mom banned me from giving blood at the school blood drives, because I always ended up looking like someone had beaten me (They sent the trainees to Broken Arrow High School blood drives. Not the best)
At BYU, though, I've had success. I can do it not very many minutes, usually just in between my classes.
I've never passed out.
But I do bruise easily.
Somehow, I always end up having these veins that don't want to relinquish their precious syrup of life. So, the nurses have to persuade them by moving the needle.
This is what happened on Monday when I gave blood in the ward blood drive.
Today, (early Friday morning) this is what my arm looks like.

Good thing it's winter and long sleeves are acceptable, people might think I'm a druggie.

If that's the way the first class went, this semester does not bode well.

This morning I had class at 8:00 in the a.m. (bleh)
Just like I have every school day. Since June.
First of all, it took FOREVER to find the class.
I didn't think it would be hard.
I've been going to this school for 4 years.
I've had countless classes in the JFSB.
But I walked around for 5 minutes trying to find B071 (It's hidden in that corner you didn't think had classrooms in it. Just so you know).
I had left with enough time to get to class on time, but had not given myself time to find the class, so I was about 5 minutes late.
The professor was going over the tardy policy as I was walking in (apparently they are not acceptable AT ALL in that class) and gave me a look. I felt the need to explain myself, and he told me that if I can't find the room, I should leave 5 minutes earlier. Because I'm psychic and knew that I wouldn't be able to find the room ahead of time. Thanks.
Then he continued to go over the syllabus, and said that Intro to Interiors (which i haven't taken) was a required prerequisite.
I figured I'd be quiet, not say that I hadn't taken it, and drop the class without anyone knowing.
Apparently that professor hates me.
Professor: "Has anyone not taken the class?"
I raised my hand.
He then proceeded to kick me out of the class.
It's not a huge deal, I didn't really want to stay for another 45 minutes in a class that I wasn't going to take, but It was a little embarrassing.
And he yelled at me.
Not the greatest start of the semester.
I should have slept in.

sick!

Two days ago, I saw a guy eating ice cream off the floor. Because he dropped it there.
Really, sir? Really?

secret wish

I always want to open the boxes under the trees in the library. Are they empty, or are they secret presents?

leaving on a jetplane.

I believe that I have mentioned before my dislike of flying. But, I don't think I've told you why. I know that flights can go smoothly. I've heard that it can happen, but somehow, it's never happened to me.

Examples:

1. The first time I flew on my own, I was going to BYU to visit my sister for spring break my junior year in high school. My flight was to leave at 1:00 in the afternoon and I should have arrived in Provo around 6:00. I got through security, was sitting in my gate calmly waiting to board the plane, when a loud voice came on the intercom and told everyone to go back to security. Let me emphasize something.
Everyone. Not just my flight, not just the airline, but every single person in the airport had to go back through security. Then wait for about 3 hours before we were allowed to go back to our gates. Then wait another 2 hours before we actually made it into the air. I don't think I made it into Provo until around 10:00 at night. Why? Because some idiot tried to get onto an airplane by walking around the airport. First really crappy experience.

2. For the most part, the next couple times were okay. Don't get me wrong. Lots of turbulance, lots of delays, but no huge issues. Then I flew to Jackson, MS after my freshman year to help Daisy after she had twins. I had a layover in Chicago. Dana told me to find the rainbow tunnel. I never found it, but that's only the tip of the ice burg of why that layover was bad. Along with not finding the magical rainbow tunnel, there was a ginormous storm in Chicago. Torrential rain. My 1 1/2 hour layover turned into a 7 hour layover. I was starving, tired, and beat down after finals, and I sat in the Chicago airport with no cell phone to tell anyone what was going on. Finally, I got on the plane at 11:00 at night (I had been traveling since 8:00 am). When I arrived in the airport in Jackson and my bag came off that little roundabout, I found out that the jerk airport people had left my dark blue duffel bag out in the rain during the entire storm. The dark blue die leaked on all of my clothes. Then I got down to the pick up area and there was no one to pick me up. So, at 1:00 in the morning in the airport in Jackson, Mississippi, I sat down on the floor and cried. I continued to cry for about 5 minutes until my mom came running in the door.

3. More delays, more crap. But, yesterday's flight took the cake. The flight went pretty smoothly. It was not the plane that I was the problem. It was me.

Yesterday morning, I had to wake up at 3:30 in order to get from Joplin, Missouri to the Tulsa airport by the time my flight left at 6:43. I had to drive, as my mom had to work that day and my dad's eyes make it hard for him to drive in the dark. About 10 minutes from the airport, my stomach turned itself inside out and decided that it was time for me to not be driving anymore. After crying out "Imgonnapukeimgonnapukeimgonnapuke!" I pulled over to the side of the road, switched places with my father and curled in a ball in the corner of the car until we made it to the airport. I made it through security and onto the plane without a glitch. The flight went smoothly, I assume. I slept through it. I woke up when we were taxiing around and my stomach was flip flopping all around. It was upside down and inside out. It was tap dancing and doing back hand springs (my stomach is very talented, apparently). I knew that even though there was nothing in my stomach, it was coming up. And it did. Thank heavens for barf bags.
However, the next flight did not have those happy little bags in them. For this one I had to make a fun for the bathroom. Getting sick in an airplane bathroom is not really the easiest experience.

I am grateful for airplanes. I'm glad that I can make a 22 hour car trip shrink to 7 hours. It's great, it's exciting, it's fantastic. However, just once in my life, I'd like it if I could just have one flight that goes smoothly.

The day the music died.

(Kay, maybe not the music. Maybe it's actually the Tabasco)
When my parent brought me to BYU, they took me grocery shopping and to Wal-Mart.
My mom helped me pick out the food and all of the household items.
My dad bought me a flashlight and Tabasco. Green and red.
Today, the green ran out. I almost cried.
I know, that's a weird thing to be sad about, but I almost made it all 4 years on those bottles. For some reason I get really attached to weird things that my parents buy me.
Bamboo, Tabasco, the flashlight.
I may keep the bottle.
I know, I have issues.

Dear Grooveshark.

I'm in advertising. I understand that they paid for the spot and so you have to put their ad up,
HOWEVER
Your big huge Victoria's Secret ad spread across the page makes listening to grooveshark awkward on BYU campus. I feel like someone's going to come kick me out for viewing inappropriate material. This is why I am listening to Pandora right now.

I'm sorry, can we still be friends?

oh the glories of priority registration

7 classes
15.5 hours
5 minutes to sign up
I got into them all.

That's a first.

frustrating.

As implied by the fact that I got new glasses yesterday, I've been to the eye doctor recently.

While at the eye doctor, we had a nice little chat about Macular Degeneration. Magular Degeneration is an eye disease which is the number one cause of blindness in America. My grandmother has it. My uncle has it. My father has it. So, I am susceptible to it.

Ergo, our chat.

During this chat, my eye doctor gave me information on how to slow, stop, and reverse Macular Degeneration.

So, I thought I'd send this information to my parents. This shouldn't be too hard, I thought, I'll just scan the information in and e-mail it to my parents. And, while I'm at it, I'll put it up on my family's website as well, so everyone can benefit from the wealth. I was feeling very generous.

Today, I trucked my little self over to the library to scan this little bit of paper into the compy.

Then I hit a snag. The 7 kajillion scanners that used to populate the main area of the library have been moved. No matter, I thought, I'll just use the copier to email it. Well, that would've worked, had I been able to get at a copier at that time. One was frozen, the other was being used by somebody who didn't know what he was doing. Great.

So, I went up to the girl at the desk and asked where the scanners went. She said that the software was on the fritz, but there were more downstairs in periodicals. So I went there. And tried 3 scanners. None worked. The only explanation I have for this is that when BYU installed the new Windows (7?) they didn't get the right hook up for scanners. I don't know how it works. I'm not a computer person.

So, I went back up to see if the copiers were free. One was still frozen, and another dolt was using the other (this one couldn't figure out where the paper came out. he copied the same thing 3 times till he finally asked where it came out. what a concept). I waited my turn, only to find out that there is no longer an option of emailing from the copier. Yes, that was available last year, but this year? No. So, I made a copy to send to my dad. Maybe some day the god of scanners will stop his endless vendetta against me and allow me to scan one single freaking article.

the library effect

Maybe you haven't heard of it, but it's for real.
There is something about libraries that (how do I say this and remain a lady?) causes me to need a trip to the little girls room.
It's strange, don't worry, I know. I don't know if it's a common issue in society, but it is something that my family struggles with.
Usually, the BYU library does not act as a catalyst for the library effect. Probably because it's more than just a library, but a study room as well. However, today, it did.
So, I ran off to find the restroom, but was thwarted in my efforts. During the summer, the women's restroom on the main floor was closed for renovation. However, school has started now, thousands more people are on campus, which means thousands more girls needing to use that particular room. I figured it would be in full use by now. Ho ho, not so. It is closed still. Ridiculous.
I finally found an open loo, and was once again struck with a recurring question. Let me preface: at BYU, there are many married women, meaning that there are also many women with young'uns. Ergo, in most of the restrooms there are nice little couches, chairs, and yes, even beds to feed said children.
Here's my question, though. Why in the world would you want to take a nap in the bathroom, of all places. There are plenty of couches, chairs, patches of grass, and flooring around the rest of campus. I just think that a lavatory would be the most awkward room to take a nap.

the staircase debaucle that derailed my life plans.

I found a blog. It's pretty darn funny, and the girl who writes it draws pictures to go with her posts.
I decided to try it. So, this post will involve pictures. And a very embarrassing moment.

I'm studying advertising. In the advertising major, you have two options. You can do the management track or the creative track. You have to apply to the creative track. Last winter, that was my plan.
I was getting ready to turn in my portfolio after working on it for a semester, but I needed to find out the specifics (what information to put on it, what size, when. those specifics). So, I went to the professor who is in charge of the creatives' office (from now on, we'll just call him Professor), and picked up the paper that gave all of the instructions. I was hoping that Professor would be in, that I would get to talk to him, impress him, and show him how awesome I am. I would get into the track and i would WIN advertising! (well, you can't really win advertising, but I would.)

However, to my disappointment, Professor was not in his office. I picked up the sheet of paper, put it in my bag and started to walk down the stairs. As I was walking, who should be walking up the stairs but Professor.
A light bulb pinged inside my head. THIS IS THE PERFECT MOMENT TO TELL HIM WHO I AM! I was really excited.

Professor and I were in a small staircase, me walking down, him up. we did that awkward little dance where you both try to go the same way at the same time.

Now, remember. Professor doesn't know who I am. To him, I could be just another freshman who's gotten lost in the Brimhall. I could be a PR major, or a journalism major. He had no idea that he held what was then the dream of my future in his hands.

So, as Professor and I danced our awkward little dance, my brain did this:

It was a brilliant plan. He would be so impressed.

Then I started to fulfill what my brain told me to do, only halfway through, I saw a glitch. After saying "HI!" enthusiastically, I got this face from Professor:

But the words were already coming out, I had no way of stopping them, just inhibiting them a tiny bit.

So I mumbled "ahmcurrieahdell" quickly and quietly. I got a tiny glimpse of his unimpressed and confused face as I scurried down the stairs.

Three weeks later, I turned in my portfolio and waited for acceptance or denial. The result was the latter. I was upset, but I somewhat expected it.

Obviously, I'm creative (I drew all of these pictures) and I'm a hard worker. The only explanation could be that, upon seeing my portfolio, Professor remembered our awkward incident and thought that I had a mental condition and was therefore not fit to be in such a rigorous program.

Moral of the story:
Never try to introduce yourself to someone who controls your future while standing in a stairway. It does not work out well.

short norman

so, for the past three days, i've been living in Norman, OK with cassy and brandon.
brandon started school on monday, and cassy graduates in 5 days (yaya!)
so i'm helping to take care of this little sugar
for those of you who don't know, Norman, OK is the home of the University of Oklahoma.
OU is where brandon is attending school.
so, i have seen the campus a couple times.
and several of the people on the campus.
i am not kidding, every single girl i have seen on campus or walking around Norman was wearing these
really. every single girl.
maybe this is just an OU thing.
maybe there's a safety issue that says that all girls must be ready to RUN away at a second's notice.
maybe this is a fashion trend that's sweeping the nation but hasn't hit BYU yet (we do have a strict dress code).
it was a little strange, though, to see all those girls wearing exactly the same thing.

frustration.

ok. so, i made a mistake earlier this year.
i decided not to register for my classes when i should have.
(don't know why i did that, don't know why i did that)
i'm signed up for enough credits, but not the ones i want.
so, today i went to fix it.
there are two problems.
1. everything is full.
that i expected. school does start in two weeks.
2. everything is in the evening.
what the heck? i work in the evenings.
i don't understand.
what is wrong with having classes between 9 and 4?
when did that go out the window?
eeeeerrrrrrrrgggggggggg!
